The Objects Within
"The objects which surround us do not simply have utilitarian aspects; rather they serve as a kind of mirror which reflects our image."
- Ernest Dichter

I am investigating various private spaces in order to capture the ideal self that is reflected through the accumulation of objects. The organization and display of these objects portray the owner's personality, desires, values, and significant relationships. These subjects are from middle class America, but their desires and values range from attempting to recreate their childhood with toys to starting a new life together with boots. I relate and identify with these attempts to fulfill a need by acquiring and displaying these objects because just like my subjects, I use photography to reflect myself. The project started with photographing mounted animal trophies and collections, where the desire and compulsion is easily identified. To diversify and expand the work, the subjects changed to the subtle but more powerful everyday objects. Whether it is a mounted animal trophy or a deck of cards, these objects have become mirrors that reflect their owner's identity. .
