Grandpa's Farm
"What makes the Franklin County Fair in Hampton, Iowa great is how it educates younger generations on how things used to be done."
- Jennifer Litterer

The Franklin County Fair in Hampton, Iowa has had a long tradition of being a great fair. Amazing homemade ice cream, free admissions and parking, 4-H and FFA exhibits, and entertaining grandstand events are only a few of the things that make it a success year after year. What makes it great is how the Franklin County Fair educates younger generations on how things used to be done. This project documents Grandpa's Farm, which is only a small part of the fair, but it is where, in one afternoon, fair goers can witness fifty years of farming techniques. Twenty men and women volunteers run and fix equipment that dates from 1890s through the 1950s. There is a seven-team horse threshing machine, a corn shredder, a rock crusher, a sawmill, and two steam engines. These images are from the 2003-2005 fairs, and focus on the volunteers that hold up the tradition of making both Grandpa's Farm and Franklin County Fair great. .
